WEEK FIVE Assignment Bank: Tune Into Hena’s Mashups!
This week one of the assignments we were given was to choose 3-4 assignments from the “Audio Assignments” section in the assignment bank. The assignments I chose were Mixing Soundtracks (2 stars), Instrumental vs Vocals (3 1/2 stars), and Sound Effects Story (3 stars). *I did not upload on SoundCloud due to running the risk of copyright violations.*
For this assignment I mixed two instrumental soundtracks from the Disney movie Beauty and The Beast. I used the Prologue soundtrack and the ballroom music. I downloaded the videos and converted it to MP3 with the website YTMP3 website. Then, I imported both soundtracks into Audacity. I used the Fade In, Fade Out, Crossfade Clips, Crossfade Tracks, Silence, and the Amplify tool to try to achieve smooth transitions between both of the soundtracks. I think the end result came out beautifully.
For this assignment I combined the instrumental soundtrack Closer by the musical band Nuages and the ambient acapella Mermaids are Singing. I was trying to achieve that dreamy ambient feeling that I always love. I downloaded the videos and converted it to the MP3 with the website YTMP3 website. Then, I imported both soundtracks into Audacity. I used the Fade In, Fade Out, Crossfade Clips, Crossfade Tracks, Silence, and the Amplify tool to try to achieve smooth transitions between both of the soundtracks. I was having a little trouble trying to make smooth transitions, so it may sound a teeny bit chopped up. I did try my best and I do like it overall!
For this assignment I created a ninety second story using only sound effects. There is only a little bit of dialogue towards the end. I decided to create a story of a man getting attacked at a haunted mansion. He was walking in the creepy woods…he could hear the sounds of the wind and wolves. The man then approached a haunted house. He bangs on the door, and it suddenly creaks open. He walks into the house and finds a ballerina musical jewelry box. He plays the musical box, and then all of a sudden a little girl appears and tries to tell him to play with her and that he shouldn’t be afraid. He falls into her trap and she attacks him.
The first video I chose was a sound effect of someone walking in the woods. I wanted the story to start off with someone lost, and walking in the woods all alone.
The second video I used was the haunted forest sounds. I picked this video because I wanted to have a creepy background noise. This sound effect gives the listener spine-chilling vibes.
The third video I used was the sound of wolves howling in the background. This sound affect makes the forest sound even more scary and dangerous.
The fourth video I used was the sound effect of someone banging on the door. This is when the man finally approaches the house in seek of help.
The fifth video is when the man is walking and stumbles upon the little girl. This is the climax of the story, and he becomes fooled by the little girl’s words.
The sixth and final sound effect was the sound of the man screaming. This is the ending of the story. The last sound effect reveals that the man was attacked by the little girl. I used the website convertio and converted the forest and wolf videos to WAV files because the MP3 files were not processing in Audacity. The rest were regular MP3s. Then, I imported all of the sound effects into Audacity. I used the Fade In, Fade Out, Crossfade Clips, Crossfade Tracks, Silence, and the Amplify tool to try to achieve smooth transitions between both of the soundtracks. I also used the selection tool to move each of the clips around, so the sounds would transition one after the other. I think this turned out pretty amazing!
I participated in DS106 Radio Tweet-Along on Wednesday February 24, 2021. I really enjoyed the experience! When I tuned into the live tweet-along I heard my radio bumper! I thought that was soooo cool!!! The podcast was titled From Tree To Shining Tree. This podcast was about The “Wood Wide Web.” The main trees’ roots connect to the rest of the trees. Fungus plays a huge role in this podcast. We learned about how fungus and trees get their minerals! The sound effects were so satisfying! I liked tweeting along with the DS106 classmates!
